Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne by Private Car: Route, Stops and Travel Time

Mui Ne is the closest real beach escape from Ho Chi Minh City – red and white sand dunes, a harbour full of colourful fishing boats and a long strip of resorts along the sea. Since the expressway opened all the way to Phan Thiet, the drive has become far easier: around 200 km and usually about three hours door to door, instead of the five or more it used to take on the old highway. Here's how the route works, where to stop and how to plan the trip.
Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne: the route
Distance: roughly 200–220 km, depending on where you start in the city and where your resort is.
Travel time: usually 3 to 3.5 hours by private car. Allow extra time on Friday evenings, Sunday afternoons and public holidays.
Route: east out of the city onto the Ho Chi Minh City – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway, then the Dau Giay – Phan Thiet Expressway, and finally the coast road from Phan Thiet into Mui Ne.
Rest stop: there is one main service area on the first stretch of expressway, about 30–40 minutes out of the city – a good place for coffee and a toilet break.
Leaving Saigon early – ideally before 7 am – gets you past the city traffic and to Mui Ne in time for lunch by the sea.
Private car, bus or train?
Private car with driver: door to door from your hotel, apartment or Tan Son Nhat Airport, leaving whenever you like and stopping when you want. Best for families, groups, golfers with bags and anyone who wants to see the dunes on arrival day.
Limousine van or sleeper bus: cheap, but runs to fixed times, usually leaves from the backpacker area in District 1 and takes longer.
Train to Phan Thiet: relaxed and scenic, but there is no station in Mui Ne itself, so you still need a car for the last stretch.
What to see in and around Mui Ne

White Sand Dunes (Bau Trang): the biggest dunes, about an hour's drive north-east of the resort strip. Go at sunrise for soft light and cool sand.
Red Sand Dunes: closer to town and at their best around sunset.
Fairy Stream (Suoi Tien): a shallow stream you walk barefoot, between red and white sandstone formations.
Mui Ne fishing village: come early in the morning to watch the round basket boats bring in the catch.
Po Shanu Cham Towers: small hilltop Cham temples with views over the bay.
Ke Ga Lighthouse: south of Phan Thiet, an easy half-day trip along the coast.
With a private car your driver waits while you explore, so the dunes, the stream and the fishing village fit comfortably into one day.
When to go
The dry season, roughly November to April, brings sunshine and strong afternoon winds – ideal for kitesurfing, less so for lazing on the beach after lunch. Mornings are the calmest time for both the dunes and the sea. Weekends and Vietnamese holidays fill up the resorts and the roads, so book early if you're travelling around Christmas, New Year or Tết.
Making it a longer trip
Mui Ne fits neatly into a southern loop. Many travellers continue up into the hills to Da Lat – see our Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat guide – or head back to Saigon and fly on. A private driver can do the whole loop with you, so you never have to repack for a bus.
