Hanoi to Ninh Binh Day Trip by Private Car: Trang An, Hoa Lu and Hang Mua

Ninh Binh is often called the "Ha Long Bay on land": limestone peaks rising out of rice fields and rivers, with caves, temples and the old royal capital of Hoa Lu in between. It sits about 95–100 km south of Hanoi, around 1.5 to 2 hours by expressway, which makes it the easiest big day trip from the capital.
How to get there
Group tour buses are the cheapest option, but they run to a fixed schedule and usually stop at the same places as everyone else. Trains and public buses get you to Ninh Binh city, but the sights are spread out around it, so you still need transport once you arrive. A private car with driver takes you door to door from your Hanoi hotel, waits at every stop, and lets you set the pace.
A one-day itinerary by private car
7:30 – Leave Hanoi early. You'll reach Ninh Binh before the tour buses and get the boats and viewpoints at their quietest.
9:30 – Trang An boat trip. Local rowers take you along the river, through caves and past riverside temples. Trang An is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Most routes take around 2 to 3 hours; ask at the counter which routes are running that day.
Lunch – try the local specialities: goat meat (dê núi) and crispy burnt rice (cơm cháy).
Afternoon – Hoa Lu Ancient Capital (the 10th-century royal capital, with temples to the Dinh and Le kings) or the huge Bai Dinh Pagoda complex.
Late afternoon – Hang Mua viewpoint. Around 500 stone steps lead to a dragon sculpture on the ridge, with the best view over Tam Coc. Go when the sun is lower and the climb is cooler.
Around 18:00 – drive back to Hanoi and arrive in time for dinner.

Trang An or Tam Coc?
Both are boat trips through the karst landscape. Trang An has longer routes through more caves and temples. Tam Coc is shorter and runs through open rice fields, which turn golden around harvest time in late May and early June. If you only have one day, most people choose one boat trip and spend the rest of the day on Hoa Lu, Bai Dinh or Hang Mua.
Practical tips
Wear a hat and bring sunscreen and water: the boats are open and there is little shade on the river.
Comfortable shoes for the steps at Hang Mua.
Weekends and Vietnamese public holidays are much busier, especially around Tết. Go on a weekday if you can.
Carry some cash in small notes. Tipping your boat rower is customary.
Why a private car works best
Ninh Binh's sights are 10–20 minutes apart. Your driver waits at each stop, so there's no hunting for taxis or motorbikes.
Leave earlier than the tour buses and come back when you're ready.
From sedans and Kia Carnival MPVs to 9- and 11-seat VIP limousines, there's a vehicle for couples, families and groups.
Flying in? Combine it with a Noi Bai Airport transfer.
