Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat by Private Car: Route, Stops and Travel Time

Da Lat is Vietnam's favourite highland escape: cool air, pine forests, lakes and flower farms, just one long drive from Ho Chi Minh City. The road trip itself is part of the experience, climbing from the southern plains into the Central Highlands.
How far is it and how long does it take?
The drive from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat is around 300 km and usually takes about 6–7 hours with a couple of short stops. Travel time depends on traffic leaving Saigon, weekend and holiday traffic, and the weather in the mountains.
The route in brief
Leaving Saigon: head east through Dong Nai province. Leaving early in the morning helps avoid the busiest traffic.
Bao Loc: the road climbs into Lam Dong province, known for its tea and coffee plantations – a good place for a coffee break.
Mountain passes: the Bao Loc and Prenn passes bring winding roads and green views before you reach the Da Lat plateau.
Arrival: your driver takes you straight to your hotel, villa or homestay.
Where to stop along the way
A coffee or tea stop around Bao Loc, with views over the plantations.
A lunch break halfway, at a clean roadside restaurant your driver recommends.
Photo stops on the passes when it is safe to pull over.
With a private car, you decide when to stop – there is no fixed bus schedule.
When to go
Da Lat is cool all year. From around May to November, afternoon showers are common, so a morning departure is best. The dry months from December to April bring clear skies and are popular with families and couples.
