Tết 2027 in Vietnam: A Travel Guide and How to Book Your Private Car

Tết, the Lunar New Year, is the biggest holiday of the year in Vietnam. In 2027, the first day of Tết falls on Saturday, 6 February (Year of the Goat). It is a beautiful time to see the country: streets fill with peach blossoms and kumquat trees, families gather, and cities glow with lanterns and fireworks. It is also the busiest travel period of the year, so a little planning goes a long way.

This guide explains what changes around Tết and how to keep your airport transfers and intercity trips smooth with a private car and driver.

What changes in Vietnam around Tết

  • Travel demand peaks before and after Tết. Millions of people travel home to their families in the days before the holiday and return afterwards. Flights, trains and buses fill up early.

  • Many shops and restaurants close for several days. Big hotels, resorts and tourist areas stay open, but smaller local businesses often take a break around the first days of the new year.

  • Transport is harder to book at short notice. Ride-hailing and taxis can be scarce and more expensive during the peak days.

  • Cities feel different. Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi become quieter during the first days of Tết as residents leave, while beach and highland destinations such as Nha Trang, Da Lat, Phu Quoc and Hoi An get busier.

Vietnam's Ministry of Home Affairs has proposed a seven-day public holiday from Thursday 4 to Wednesday 10 February 2027. The final schedule is confirmed by the government, so check the official announcement before you lock in your plans. Background on the festival: Tết on Wikipedia.

Why a private car makes sense during Tết

During the holiday, the biggest risk is not traffic – it is availability. A pre-booked private car with a professional driver removes that uncertainty:

  • Your vehicle and driver are confirmed in advance, with a fixed quotation and no hidden fees.

  • For airport pickups, your driver monitors your flight and waits at the meeting point with a name sign.

  • You travel door to door with your family and luggage, with no shared rides and no unnecessary stops.

  • On long drives you can stop when you want – for photos, meals or a rest.

Tips for a smooth Tết trip

  • Book your car as soon as your flights are confirmed. The weeks around Tết fill up first.

  • Send your full itinerary in one message: flight numbers, arrival times, number of passengers, luggage and hotel addresses.

  • Allow extra time on the days just before and after the holiday, when roads out of the big cities are busiest.

  • Carry some cash in small notes for markets and tips – it is also a Tết tradition to give lucky money (lì xì) in red envelopes.

  • Greet people with "Chúc mừng năm mới" – Happy New Year. It is always appreciated.
