One Day in Ho Chi Minh City with a Private Driver: A Relaxed City Tour Itinerary

Ho Chi Minh City – still Saigon to most locals – packs French colonial landmarks, war history, Chinese temples and a buzzing food scene into one huge, fast-moving city. The sights are spread out, the heat is real and traffic can be slow, so a car with a driver who waits at every stop makes a day here far easier. Here's a realistic one-day plan with timings, plus how to shorten it to half a day.
Why see Saigon by private car?
Distances add up: the colonial centre is walkable, but Cholon (Chinatown) and the riverside viewpoints are a drive away.
Heat and rain: it's around 30°C most of the year, and in the rainy season (roughly May to November) afternoon downpours are common. Stepping back into an air-conditioned car between stops makes a big difference, especially for children and older travellers.
No haggling or app-hopping: one driver for the whole day, with your bags and shopping safely in the car.
One-day itinerary at a glance
8:00 – Hotel pick-up. Start early, before the heat and the midday crowds.
8:30 – War Remnants Museum. The city's most visited museum, covering the Vietnam War (known here as the American War). It opens at 7:30; allow 1 to 1.5 hours. Some galleries are graphic, so parents may want to look ahead.
10:15 – Independence Palace. Also called Reunification Palace, this is where the war ended on 30 April 1975. Walk through the 1960s state rooms and down into the command bunker; allow about an hour.
12:00 – Lunch. Try com tam (broken rice with grilled pork) or a bowl of pho – your driver can suggest a clean, local spot nearby.
13:30 – Colonial landmarks. The Central Post Office, Book Street next door and Notre Dame Cathedral, whose decade-long restoration has been wrapping up – check whether the interior is open on the day.
14:30 – Cholon (Chinatown). A 20 to 30 minute drive west to Thien Hau Temple, with its hanging coils of incense, and the wholesale bustle of Binh Tay Market.
16:30 – Back to the centre. Rest at your hotel, or stroll Nguyen Hue Walking Street and the riverside as the evening cools.
18:00 – Sunset. Finish with a view from a rooftop bar in the centre, or from the observation deck at Landmark 81 across the river.
Flying out in the evening? Many travellers do this day with their luggage in the car and finish at the airport – see our Tan Son Nhat Airport transfer guide.

Only have half a day?
Morning history loop (about 4 hours): War Remnants Museum, Independence Palace, the Central Post Office and the cathedral.
Afternoon Cholon and markets (about 4 hours): Thien Hau Temple and Binh Tay Market, then Ben Thanh Market and a coffee stop.
Cu Chi Tunnels (about 5 to 6 hours): the tunnel network lies roughly 70 km northwest of the centre, usually 1.5 to 2 hours each way. Ben Dinh is closer and more set up for visitors; Ben Duoc is quieter and further out. Leave around 7:30 to beat the heat.
Tips for a smooth day
Dress for temples and the palace: covering shoulders and knees is the safe choice.
Avoid rush hour: traffic is heaviest roughly 7:00 to 9:00 and 16:30 to 19:00, so plan longer drives outside those windows.
Carry small notes: markets and street stalls rarely take cards.
Weekends are busier: the palace, the museum and Nguyen Hue fill up with local families on Saturdays and Sundays.
Pace yourself: pick three or four main stops rather than trying to see everything.
Beyond the city
Saigon is also a good base for day trips. The Mekong Delta is about two hours away for boat rides, orchards and canal villages, and the beach town of Vung Tau is a similar drive to the coast. Travelling over the holidays? Here's how to get around Ho Chi Minh City at Christmas and New Year.
