Vung Tau is the closest beach city to Ho Chi Minh City, which makes it a favourite weekend escape for locals and a relaxing add-on for visitors. It is about 100 km away, and there are three main ways to get there.

Option 1: Private car with driver

  • Travel time: usually around 2–3 hours, depending on traffic leaving the city and weekend congestion.

  • Door to door: from your hotel, home or Tan Son Nhat Airport straight to your Vung Tau hotel.

  • Best for: families, groups, travellers with luggage, and anyone who wants to stop along the way.

  • You can also plan a day trip: go in the morning, enjoy seafood and the beach, and return in the evening.

Option 2: Speed ferry

  • Speed ferries run from Bach Dang Wharf in the city centre and take around 2 hours.

  • A good choice for solo travellers staying near the river, but schedules are limited and change between weekdays and weekends.

  • You still need transport from your hotel to the pier and from the Vung Tau terminal to your hotel.

Option 3: Bus or shuttle van

  • The cheapest option, with frequent departures.

  • Shared seats, fixed stops and less space for luggage – less comfortable for families or late arrivals.

Things to do in Vung Tau

  • Walk or drive up to the Vung Tau lighthouse for views over the coast.

  • Relax on Back Beach (Bai Sau) or Front Beach (Bai Truoc).

  • Visit the Christ of Vung Tau statue on Nho Mountain.

  • Enjoy fresh seafood in the evening before heading back.

Our recommendation

For couples and solo travellers on a budget, the ferry is a pleasant ride. For families, groups and business travellers, a private car is the most comfortable and flexible option – no transfers, no waiting and room for everyone's luggage.
