Da Nang to Hue by Private Car: The Hai Van Pass Route, Stops and Travel Time
Updated: 2 days ago

Da Nang and Hue are only about 100 km apart, and the road between them is one of the most scenic drives in Vietnam. Take the tunnel and you're in Hue in a little over two hours. Take the old Hai Van Pass instead and you get sea views, a historic gate at the summit and the lagoon at Lang Co along the way. With a private car, you can choose on the day.
Two ways to drive: the tunnel or the pass
Via the Hai Van Tunnel: the fastest route. Plan on roughly 2 to 2.5 hours door to door. Best for airport transfers, late arrivals or bad weather.
Via the Hai Van Pass: the scenic route. The climb is about 20 km and reaches roughly 500 metres above sea level. It adds around 30–45 minutes of driving, plus however long you stop. With photo breaks and lunch, allow 4 to 5 hours.
Stops along the way
Hai Van Gate: a 19th-century Nguyen dynasty fortress at the top of the pass, on the old boundary between Da Nang and Hue. It has been restored and is free to visit. On a clear day you can see Da Nang Bay on one side and Lang Co on the other.
Lang Co Bay: a long curve of sand about 30 km north of Da Nang, with a quiet lagoon behind it. A good place for fresh seafood at lunch.
Lap An Lagoon: calm water framed by mountains, popular for photos, especially early in the morning.

What to see in Hue
Hue was Vietnam's imperial capital under the Nguyen dynasty, and its monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With one day, focus on these:
The Imperial City: walls, gates, palaces and gardens inside the citadel. Allow at least 2–3 hours.
Thien Mu Pagoda: a seven-storey tower on the Perfume River and one of Hue's best-known landmarks.
The royal tombs: Khai Dinh, with its ornate mosaics, and Tu Duc, set among lakes and pine trees. They are spread out south of the city, so a car makes them easy to combine.
Day trip or one way?
Many travellers do Hue as a long day trip from Da Nang or Hoi An: leave early, take the pass on the way up, visit the citadel and one tomb, and come back through the tunnel in the evening. Others stay a night in Hue and continue north. We can arrange either, including a one-way transfer from Hoi An to Hue.
When to go and weather notes
Spring and early summer usually bring the clearest views from the pass. From about September to December, central Vietnam has its rainy season, and fog can roll over the pass with little warning. On those days your driver may suggest the tunnel for safety. Keep your plans a little flexible, and we'll adjust the route on the day.
Why a private car works best
You choose the pass or the tunnel, and where and how long to stop.
Your driver waits while you explore the citadel and tombs, so there's no hunting for taxis between sites.
Luggage stays in the car if you're moving on to Hue for the night.
From Kia Carnival MPVs to 9- and 11-seat VIP limousines, there's a vehicle for couples, families and groups.
